Video Gaming
In my personal life I never had the opportunity to deal with a virtual community on
a professional level or in relation to my studies until I began the Virtual Environments
module in year 3 of my course.
But I have some experience with the virtual community based on my personal
interests. In my free time I spend quite some time playing video games. There are
many genres I enjoy, I would find myself playing life simulators most often, games
such as Sims or Minecraft have huge online communities. Users have the option of
playing Minecraft together once an invite is sent by a party. I often played as such
with my close friends. We could spend hours, if not several days in a row going mad
over our new build, which would usually consist of a ridiculously large castle or
something of similar nature. Using the chat feature allows the players to co-ordinate
what their doing and figure out what each person needs to do to reach their end goal
build.
When I’m seeking to play something slightly different and more exciting, I often
swerve towards Destiny, a first-person shooter game. This game consists of two
different basic modes. PVE (player vs environment) and PVP (player vs player).
Personally, I enjoy playing PVE much more over PVP due to activity versatility.
Players have a choice of playing story missions, strikes, raids and much more. Raids
are harder multiplayer activities that contain of several bosses and puzzles that need
to be solved, usually this type of activity can’t be done solo (unless you’re a beast at
the game). Several years ago, I played raids pretty heavily as I enjoyed how
challenging they were. I was able to construct a team that consisted of complete
strangers. We all used the voice chat feature to communicate and got on together
really well. Soon after our first raid we found ourselves getting closer and playing
every raid together, and even completed easier strikes together just because we
enjoyed each other’s company, and this is how I managed to have my first very
positive virtual relationship with people I’ve never met before. Although we no longer
play it’s a fun memory to look back on.
